Parched in California

#1

Post by Azuleja »

After I managed to keep my succulent wheelbarrow alive for a couple of years I figured I was responsible enough to branch out and grow some more exciting things, like agaves. Much to my surprise I'd been growing one all along. It's amateur hour in agaveville, folks.

The drought is handing us our asses and half our yard is dead. Even native plants are struggling. It took a while to come to terms with this but now I have agave pups scattered around in pots, trays of seedlings in the windowsill and a vision in my mind of a sculptural xeric landscape more beautiful than anything we had before. The vision seems a long way off and I feel seriously behind the curve.

I'm here to be a sponge and learn. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience so generously. I love the galleries and the travelogs are amazing. Fortuitously, the screen name agave killer was taken. Maybe it's a sign there's hope for me yet.

Welcome! That's a nice-looking arrangement, and I agree - your vision for a sculptural xeric landscape beats grass anyday!

Welcome. I'm also in So CA & love xeriscaping and especially agaves (followed by aloes, cacti, euphorbia & crassulacae).

I see two agaves in your wheelbarrow, what look like A. victoriae-reginae & A. isthmensis.

Thank you, I hope to visit HBG the next time I'm down your way. I don't have A. isthmensis (would like to) but yes that's A. victoria-reginae with a pup. It was a grocery store find that I neglected for at least a year. It just refused to die. I've separated them now and placed the parent in the ground. I would love to have a grouping of them someday.

That's no an isthmensis at about 2 o'clock above the victoriae-reginae?

I'm not sure what it's proper name is, but sadly it's not an agave just another little grocery store find.

I'll be visiting Succulent Gardens in Castroville this week. I'm really hoping I'll find some new agaves to bring home.

Welcome to the xeric jungle!
Agave
"American aloe plant," 1797, from Greek Agaue, proper name in mythology (mother of Pentheus), from agauos "noble," perhaps from agasthai "wonder at".

I planted another mixed container. The A. seemanianna ssp pygmaea 'Dragon Toes' (that's a mouthful) was in a 6" pot at a nursery. The main plant was dead and gone but 4 offsets were overflowing the pot so it felt like a 4 for 1 deal and I couldn't leave them there. I'll remove the aloe if the agave gets too big.
