Agave
"American aloe plant," 1797, from Greek Agaue, proper name in mythology (mother of Pentheus), from agauos "noble," perhaps from agasthai "wonder at".

I think of a quadraploid Agave americana rather than an expansa due mainly to the gradual acumination of the leaves and the frequency of leaf reflection (could be shade or obvious thirst of the large plant). Have never found an expansa as striking as the one found in Jalisco by Gentry.
