Aloe harlana

Post Number:#1  Postby Geoff » Thu Feb 13, 2014 5:04 pm

This Ethiopian is one of the more confused Aloes in cultivation, but one I can actually identify with about 95% certainty, thanks to seeing several 'real things' in cultivation, both in the Huntington and in a private garden planted by a true expert. Problem is, Aloe hemmingii, about which its actual existence is a bit suspect (may be a form of Aloe somaliensis) is a VERY common aloe in cultivation and often labeled incorrectly as Aloe harlana... so much so that I would guess well over 3/4 of the on line Aloes labeled as Aloe harlana are NOT Aloe harlana, but this Aloe hemmingii plant. Below are many photos of Aloe harlana uploaded in an effort to get across what this plant actually looks like. Problem is, of course, this one is a bit variable, as are many of these other spotted north African 'plastic-leaved' (as I refer to them as, due to their shiny, stiff, plastic-like leaf consistency) as well.

Aloe harlana is a relatively large plant (for a 'plastic-like spotted aloe)- about 18" to 2' in diameter and at least 18" tall (this is WAY larger than any Aloe hemmingii). It is almost always solitary (though per the guide, not always). Plant shape is somewhat spreading and upright (versus just spreading for Aloe hemmingii) and leaves area dark to deep lime green with faint to somewhat prominent linear spotting on both surfaces of the leaves (somewhat similar to Aloe hemmingii, though its spots are rarely faint). Flowers are in winter only (unlike A hemmingii, which CAN flower in winter, but flowers repeatedly throughout year often) and on multi branched inflorescences topped with dark scarlet to almost chocolate-red flowers in capitate racemes (not pink like Aloe hemmingii or in a narrow, open, conical or columnar racemes). The flowers are really the best differentiating morphological characteristic which sets this 'plastic-like' north African spotted aloe apart.
