This is one of many spotted South African stemless aloes that are a bit hard to tell apart until they flower... the actually many are still hard to tell apart even from their flowers... but this is not one of those. The inflorescences of this species are highly branched and covered with brilliant red flower racemes making it one of the more ornamental of this myriad of spotted aloes. To me, the spotting pattern is also a bit more intense and ornamental- starting out more as striations when young and graduating to long, linear or lenticular spots with age. It is a slow to moderate grower with no particular problems relative to the other spotted aloes... though I see less leaf tip necrosis on this species than others during hot, dry summers.

Most maculate aloes seem to have impressive cold hardiness, though this one is reported to be a relative wimp in that category. However, temps down into the mid 20s F did not damage mine at all, not even killing the early flower spike, so I think it's more cold hardy than reported.

pretty sure a label was moved or a big error made.. that is certainly NOT Aloe brandraaiensis. Recall what the flowers looked like?

nice looking plants in UC Berkely botanical Gardens, though not seen it sucker like this anywhere else, so proper identification may be in question
