What's growing on top of P. penicillata???

Does anyone know if the growths on top (see 2nd pic) are buds or pups? I have grown his for 3 years and it is quite large for the species, but it hasn't bloomed yet.

My first sense is: pups. I do not think the flowers on Parodia have that kind of base, but if there were to be flowers you should know very soon.

Thanks, mcvan. Seems like the right call to me. It frustrates me that it is incredibly healthy and vigorous for 3 years, but no blooms. I think I may need to keep it cooler/colder this winter.

Brooks, do you ever fertilize? I do not grow many Parodia, no particular reason why, just have not gotten around to them yet. However, my Mammillaria became much more consistent flowerers when I put them in soil with some time release miracle grow rose/orchid bloom fertilizer granules mixed in. Forcing them into dormancy throughout the winter may help, but I also know people who swear by keeping their potted plants 'awake' and growing throughout the winter, who still get plenty of blooms in the spring - they have pretty good conditions though to do that.

I will give it a try. Thanks for the tips. I have been putting off repotting (thinking that cramped quarters might encourage blooming). It may be a little late this year, so maybe I will repot in the spring. Appreciate the input.
