It is very convincing! 2018 would be a good time to refresh and expand the vocab . . .Paul S wrote:Vale - muchas gracias.

According to legend, Crazy Horse and Bothe were both collected in Texas.

Re: Agave salmiana variants
that's a good point. But the question remains, where did it come from before it was discovered there.
Here are some of the cupreata-ish plants from Puebla that share characteristics of crazy horse. First one near palenque, last three photographed in a median, so they are also moved around for aesthetic purposes.

To Clarify, I'm not saying crazy horse IS a cupreata hybrid, but rather that there are plants in the south that look to be cupreata or cupreata intergrades that have been moved out of range of cupreata and that these plants share several features with crazy horse. Theses plants can often be encountered in proximity to potatorum and salmiana.

Re: Agave salmiana variants
2018 now, and this thing with wider leaves yet - typical leaf now a full 12" in width. At 6' 4", I'm not tall enough to get a full overhead shot of it now holding the camera up as high as I can - it's too big, and I was too lazy to go get a ladder. Still, a couple of good views of the fascinating leaves...

Your wonderful agave looks like Agave ovatifolia was in the mix of its creation at some point in time.
Very nice indeed.

Re: Agave salmiana variants
Though it is still young, here is an agave ovatifolia seedling with ripply leaves that originated as seed from the JC Raulston Arboretum.
The Agave ovatifolia bloom sequence overlapped with that of Agave americana ssp. protamerica and an Agave asperrima.
Late last year the leaf margins started having the look of your plant. Alas, this cold winter has damaged all of the outer leaves, so it will be late this year before I can provide photos for comparison. Fortunately, the central spear (leaves) are intact.

Re: Agave salmiana variants
One feature I see with your plant that I associate with A. ovatifolia and absent in my plant is that typical and very nice bluish color. Mine has always been decidedly green.

Re: Agave salmiana variants
This is my A.salmania and one of my favorite... love the look and the color. I like the other versions in this post too with more curved leaves. Maybe as mine ages it will change a little?

Looks like your guy wants some more light. Give it some room in a bigger pot to stretch it's roots out and see what happens. Agave salmiana is one that will always reward you with offsets.Bananaguy wrote:This is my A.salmania and one of my favorite... love the look and the color. One year later look at both A. 'Crazy Horse, and A. 'Bothe' - looking very much like the same thing to me.

Re: Agave salmiana variants
I have both too and agree they look the same. The only difference I see in my own plants is that Crazy Horse may be more of a dark blue green. I'm still watching my own plants to see if this changes as they grow. Bothe suffered more cold damage, but it has been here a shorter time and is could be less acclimated.

Re: Agave salmiana variants
Some photos of Mr Ripple and Bothe of this thread remind me sometimes my shrevei magna when it was juvenile.
The photo below is an Agave salmiana I put in the ground approximately 10 years ago, I did not think it could become so big. Some plants identified as tecta look like this one.
