Mating Giant Agave Bugs. Note the orange and black legs and antennae. Such strange looking creatures. They are sucking insects and feed on the juices of plants; agaves and yuccas are among their favorites.

Been there, done that! One of the best habitat hikes in all of AZ. Great shots!
Agave
"American aloe plant," 1797, from Greek Agaue, proper name in mythology (mother of Pentheus), from agauos "noble," perhaps from agasthai "wonder at".
"Some talk the talk, others walk the walk, but I stalk the stalk"
Wow, very nice photos and great photo catalog of a diversity of plants. Love the cliff-hangers, and the red-rockers are fantastic! Thanks for the show.
Thanks guys! This really is a wonderful area. I felt like the proverbial kid in a candy store! (Only, the candy wasn't for sale.) I've been up this trail a couple of times before, but I can't figure out why it took me 9 years to return. This should be a required hike at least once a year.
