Much better. :))

Fred you can even use MS Paint to rotate photos. Super easy to do, once you've done it once or twice.
Agave
"American aloe plant," 1797, from Greek Agaue, proper name in mythology (mother of Pentheus), from agauos "noble," perhaps from agasthai "wonder at".

'Muchas Gracias para la informacion'. It took several rotations 'every which a way' to get it right. Now that I know I can change the pictures upright, I will. I wonder why they start coming upside down ? Anyway, no matter, I do know I can correct.

What?!? Is this really South Carolina? These look like botanical garden specimens in the west. I visited Spring Preserve in vegas recently and yours are as nice as the beautiful ones I saw at the nature preserve.

Your posts have made me curious about South Carolina climate and topography. Time for a little research.

...come on down. Lots of people from the NE are moving to Upstate Sc. Also many Floridians are moving here to escape hurricanes and to enjoy our mild winters and less humid summers.. Property here is much much cheaper than in the NE.

Haha. It's gonna have to get significantly bluer for me to consider that, and I don't mean the sky. Be well.

Then come to NC and help us turn IT blue. We are much closer to that goal. And our agaves grow big too...

I am the only Blue' on my block perhaps with the exception of one household, he has a 'Man Bun. LOL Does that mean blue? I gave him an Agave lophantha once. So if he likes Agave perhaps there is hope.

Fred, keep the faith brother. Must be rewarding to grow such unique plants and be able to educate your neighbors about them. I can imagine that your yard is a point of interest for neighbors and tourists! Sholtzma, never say never. And with global warm...I mean, extreme weather patterns, it just might be milder in our zones in the years to come.

Very, very nice. That second picture is like a stylized, artistic image of the Sun. A perfect specimen.

agaves that don't love "full sun" in Arizona or central California seem to do reasonably well in pots in "full sun" of Philadelphia. A lot of the "blues" (glow, ember, flame) and VRs seems to fit this formula. Also, variegated forms of agaves like schidigera and kichiokan seem to dig it.

Brooks did you grow that AVR from a small plant? How old?

Just curious if you bought it that size or if you had grown it from a small plant over 10 years, I have a small variegated AVR that I have had for quite a few years that isn't any bigger than 5 or 6 inches at the most.

Perhaps you have a different variety, KLC. There are many out there that stay smaller. I would guess 5-7 years for this beauty. She began life in Philadelphia when she was younger, but I never saw it as small as what you identify. If memory serves me correctly, the previous owner was growing her in ground somewhere in CA. Can't recall the specific town.

Compacta. Has been roughly this size (about 6 inches wide) for years.

Oh, we're doing collection shots now huh? A. V-r is such a spectacular plant. Well, yours (spiny, brooks, and scfm) are. Mine have a ways to go but I love them. Spiny, that's a drooltastic photo.

I second azuleja's drooltastic comment! Wow, wow, wow!!! Such a beautiful picture. Azuleja, is the one in back a porcupine variety? This guy is new to me this summer. Is it similar?

Thanks.

Azul, your whitey is so cute! Give it a year, it will be adding leaves and growing... and looking even better. :U

All nice photos - my favorite Agave species, which I must have mentioned a million times...

Brooks, that's a $5 grocery store plant purchased in a mixed planting many years ago. It was my very first agave and at the time I didn't even realize that's what it was. Embarrassing, but also fortuitous.

Danny, you'd never guess this is the same plant below only 2 years ago (check out the pot - still in the same one). I got it from the local nursery, didn't think it was anything special, so sometime after the below photo I thew it out to fend for itself in full sun. It responded by growing all new very short and wide leaves. If you look at the group photo above, you can still see some of it's old skinny leaves down at the bottom. It's pretty amazing that it's current form appears to be purely a function of the full sun situation it's received now for the 2nd growing season.
