Close up of spines on a plant in my front yard in Mesa, AZ.
Good grower in the ground: 6-12"/year. In a pot much slower.
Young spines are black with a yellow base, older spines go white to light grey.
Fresh growth has thick ribs, which thin as the plant gets older, leading to a distinct change in appearance.
