This massive pinnate, solitary, monoecious palm is the largest palm in the world, if measured by weight and girth (there are many much taller). It is a monotypic genus with the only member being this species, as the name suggests, from Chile, where it is endangered due to over cultivation for its sagu, or pith, which is used for wine production (hence its common name, Chilean Wine Palm). Thankfully efforts are being made to preserve this remarkable species locally as well as its being one of the more popular palms to grow around the world in the temperate climate zones that do not suffer severe winters or excessive humidity. Jubaea chilensis can grow up to nearly 80' tall with a trunk diameter of up to 4' or more. It is a pinnate palm with large arching leaves that vary somewhat from palm to palm- some having upright, bristly leaves, some recurved, some droopy leaflets etc. and the colors range from olive green to blue green. Trunks retain leaves initially, but then tend to shed them exposing a very smooth, nearly unscarred grey trunk. Though this species struggles to grow in the tropics and even chillier climates that have a high humidity, it does extremely well in relatively cool climates that may experience significant freezes for shorter periods. It is a fairly drought tolerant species, but does require regular water for its first 10-15 years of life (not a fast growing palm).

Each one of those I think would look spectacular in a Zen garden with the correct gravel spread under them.

Photo's of them in habitat though are surprisingly in a lush xeric bush hillsides. Large cacti, silvery Puya's and plenty of T.chiloensis.
