Acanthophoenix rubra

Post by Geoff »

this is a relatively rare species of spiny, pinnate palm that is the preferred species of Acanthophoenix to grow in cultivation, should one live in a subtropical to tropical climate, due to its excellent ornamental appeal (for more colorful than Acanthophoenix crinita). In a Mediterranean climate this would be a pretty marginal species and may never attain even a trunk unless planted in just the right spot. These have rust colored crownshafts and attractive pinnate leaves with long leaflets arranged fairly flatly. Palms are intensely spiny as juveniles but lose a bit of spines with age... older plants are far less spiny.
