Looks a tad like a Queen palm only with nasty long, black spines spaced fairly randomly all over the trunk, leaves and flowering parts. Eventually the trunk's spines tend to wear away with time. Crown a bit sparser than that a of Queen palm. Pretty slow as a seedling but gets faster with age. Seeds are pretty large and known for their extreme hardness (cannot break these are cut these open without power tools). Can take several years to germinate. Moderate cold hardiness (down to mid 20s). Moderate drought tolerance. From Central to South America.
