aka Gastrococcos crispa. This is a Cuban species, commonly known as the Cuban Belly Palm, a name also applied to a completely unrelated species, Colpothrinax wrightii (one of the problem with common names). This palm is known for its intense spininess (even spinier than A aculeata), particularly as a young palm), but also for its swollen mid trunk in adult plants grown in plenty of water. This palm is REALLY slow in California and there are no mature palms... yet... one I know of in San Diego with some trunk but no swelling (too dry here I think). Also not very cold hardy (barely into the 20s). Was in that other genus until sometime around 2005 or later.
