Philippine palm that is very commonly grown in cultivation in tropics and indoors other wise (makes an exceptional indoor palm if provided sufficient bright light and some humidity). Was included in the Veitchia genus until late 1990s). Has closely ringed trunk, a nice, smooth crownshaft and markedly recurved leaves. Bright red and green fruits have given it the name Christmas Palm. Very easy palm to germinate and grow in tropics. Fast growing up to a manageable size. Very cold sensitive, though, and few palms survive more than a rare warm winter or two in southern California, even in the 'perfect' microclimates.
