Areca vestiaria
easily one of the most colorful of all the palms, if not THE most colorful. This is an extremely popular species to grow in the subtropics and tropics all around the world. Sadly it is too tropical for all but the most perfect California microclimates (a few skilled individuals manage to keep this plant going year after year in southern California). This Indonesian palm comes in various forms, too... suckering is probably the most common form in nature, but many have found solitary forms for cultivation. Orange crownshafts are the norm, but there are forms with striking deep red crownshafts, and these also tend to have so red in the leaves as well. Fruits are also a brilliant color (yellow to orange to red), and petioles top it off with a nice yellow to orange coloration. Leaves are wide, ridges, and a bright, 'tropical' green color. To add the unique and tropical look are a thick triangle of stilt roots supporting each palm. A well grown plant is one of the most striking palms one can grow.
