Large, suckering palm from northern Australia. This palm is tropical, but manages to survive in some of the most protected zones in a Mediterranean climate. However, I know of no mature examples in these climates (yet). All Arengas are monocarpic, but since this is a suckering species (as are almost all the Arengas as well), only the flowering stem dies and the rest of palm lives on. This one is a fairly good 'thicket' creator, developing into a mass of plant hard to penetrate or hike through. Like all the Arengas as well, this one has toxic fruits (oxalates).
