ACANTHOPHOENIX

Post by Geoff »

This group of three species are commonly called the Barbel Palms, and all exist on a few islands in the Indian Ocean north of Madagascar (Reunion and Mauritius Islands). These are all spiny, pinnate, solitary monoecious palms, two of which are in cultivation and one which is just starting to show up on some grower's gardens. Acanthophoenix crinita can be grown in a Mediterranean climate fairly easily, while the other two seem to be a bit more tropical in their needs, but at least Acanthophoenix rubra is being grown successfully in some excellent temperate microclimates. These are moderate to slow growing palms, and though Acanthophoenix crinita is of modest ornamental appeal, the other two, which are nearly identical, are rather striking, colorful palms.
