This is a group of 24 species of incredibly spiny, mostly solitary, monoecious pinnate/premorse palms from tropical America. All have wedge-shaped leaflets with jagged edges (sometimes called fishtail) and among the sharpest spines in the palm world (can stab one through any clothing and even boots). Most are fairly rare in cultivation for obvious reasons, though a few can be grown in a Mediterranean climate, and so, of course are, since most California palm growers will grow any palms that can, whether they should or not.
