ALLAGOPTERA

#1

Post by Geoff »

this group of 5 species include all nearly trunkless to short-trunked, pinnate/plumose, monoecious palms. One species, Allagoptera caudescens was lumped recently into the group due to similarities in flowers, but it is a large, trunking palm. All these palms are from South America. Only one is very common in cultivation (Allagoptera arenaria, aka Sand Palm) and it is a wonderful ornamental plant with no sharp edges or spines. All are very slow growing. A arenaria is a great palm for Mediterranean climates having excellent cold tolerance as well as being a good palm for pot culture, sun or shade and highly wind and salt tolerant as well.
