ARCHONTOPHOENIX

There are 6 solitary, monoecious, tall, crownshafted, pinnate species, all from Australia, in this group and all look a lot alike. They differ somewhat in their crownshaft color and the crown shape. As a group they are often referred to as the King Palms. They can grow up to nearly 80' tall (Archontophoenix alexandrae) but most are shorter than that. All can be grown in a Mediterranean climate, though Archontophoenix cunninghamiana is the most cold hardy of the group and one of the most commonly used landscape palms in California. In more tropical countries, Archontophoenix alexandrae would be the more commonly grown palm. These are fast growing palms but also grow well in pots.
