ARECA

Post by Geoff »

This is very large group of monoecious, pinnate, mostly solitary palms with approximately 47 species, from South Asia, to some south Pacific Islands. They are, as a group, very ornamental, but also very tropical and few can be grown successfully even in the most protected, perfect Mediterranean microclimates. Some are among the most colorful, beautiful palms in the world (eg. Areca vestiaria). Areca triandra is the most cold hardy of the group but it still struggles in most but the best microclimates. The most commonly grown species is possibly Areca catechu (aka Betel Nut Palm) due to the popularity of the narcotic-like effect of its fruits.
