Dioon spinulosum flushing in oven
Dioon spinulosum transplanted from 3 gallon nursery container into 22" pot in April, started flushing first week of June, through a hot spell with 11 days exceeding 110 degrees, still growing. It's probably getting too much sun. We'll see.

Looks pretty happy to me!
What do you call the green banded agave directly to the right of it?

I think the banded agave is what is being called "Emerald Envy". I got it from Home Depot marked 'cactus' for $6. Here's a photo from two years ago when it was cuter.

Thanks...I figured that's what it was, and was hoping maybe it had a better name than "cactus" when you bought it

They do well even in the cooler parts of the bay area. They might be the tallest trunking cycad's this far north. Although C.rumphii is catching on up here and THAT ONE i know grows fast.
Nice color too.

Re: Dioon spinulosum flushing in oven
I dug mine up a couple of months ago. I was disappointed to see...it had a few large roots..but was like a wild plant- no real rootball. I was able to put a plant the same size as the one you put into a 22" pot, into a mere 8" ceramic pot. Not a deep pot either. Its done what cycads do after that. Sit. But now its in real sun,in a hotspot. Where I had it, had gotten too shade from a pair of large King palms. Now large..not when the Cycad was put in.
It had sent ,btw, one large root almost straight down before being dug up. That root,I had to break.

A new flush of leaves after 14 months of resting. The 'Emerald Envy' agave in the background is now four feet tall and has produced one pup.

I’m considering a spinulosum, do you have any current pictures? I would be interested in seeing the growth rate

Re: Dioon spinulosum flushing in oven
Now I wonder if those "few roots' were more gophers at work.
Mean,I highly recommend D.spinulosum and just toss out that its "common"..it's only common along the soucal coastal strip. After that,in the rest of the country they are hard to find in anybody's yard.
Mine at first flushed yearly...then I dug it up when that stopped. Gophers again maybe. But it flushes better than most cycads and in hot Houston should be a terrific grower. I mean,c'mon cold summer Berkeley has a 6' trunking plant. For you in a summer of no sweaters?..

Re: Dioon spinulosum flushing in oven
It would be amazing to have a large trunked version 1 day, might as well start now. Their hardiness seems to be debatable case by case but I’ve read of them recovering from a 15*F freeze, which would be worst case scenario locally. Typically it doesn’t drop much below 25*F most winters.
