Sansevieria Stolon

#1

Post by Spination »

It appears that this Sansevieria Mutomo which I thought perhaps was beginning to bloom, as I've not seen the event in person to date, is not. it's become clear that this plant is sending out stolons, currently numbering 5, from all around the plant, from in between leaves. I'm thinking this will eventually be a very interesting looking plant with new rosettes sticking out everywhere. D)) Other Sansevierias I have that have added new rosettes all accomplished the feat from underground, so this is new to me.

The 5 new stolons/rosettes are coming along nicely. Unlike most of my Sansevieria plants which feature new plants coming out of the soil, this one is going to become one of my favorite plants as the initial rosette continues to develop into a fan, and the new rosettes develop all around completely surrounding the plant. Thank you Nature! I couldn't have designed it better myself... D))

So, here it is roughly 5 weeks later. It's a bit startling to see just how much overall growth there is. Each stolon/new rosette is completely dependent on the mother plant, and there are 5, all growing at an astounding rate. The stolons come out of the main rosette, with no roots of their own, so all the nutrients required furnishing all of that new tissue comes from the main rosette's root system, in that small pot. Amazing!

New photos almost a year later...progress.

From the original rosette are now 5 new rosettes still attached via stolons, and one of those producing another stolon, making what I envision will be an eventual chain. Anyway, I've had it for nearly 3 years in total, with never a problem, and it's a perfect plant. I could make several new plants from the secondary rosettes, but I don't have the heart, as it looks so good all together.

Thanks Winston. I have to say it's so rewarding after putting in the care, effort, and time to acquire knowledge through reading and study when the plants ultimately cooperate by looking super. :8: Yay! Makes it all worthwhile. D))

How is this plant looking now? I love the idea of a fan shaped plant with fan shaped stolons.

Eta, oh I see you posted an update elsewhere. It's grown a lot. The plant at the bottom of this Sanseverix.com page is pretty amazing. I'm guessing yours is a more short leaved version?

New photos. It appears length of leaves and fan shape is tied to maturity and age of the rhizome. Original rosette has developed into a fan shape, and the only reminder that it started out as a rosette are the original leaves lingering at the base. Also, now stolons have stolons. Now, the fan shaped structure furthest away from the original central rosette is a stolon's stolon, featuring by far the longest leaves as well. ::wink::

I'm liking the sans with aerial stolons a lot better than the underground rhizomes. Both can end up looking pretty messy but the stolons look cool escaping from the pot and can easily be pruned. Imagine how cool yours will look when all the fans are developed.

I never get tired of looking at your bella mutomo Spiny. Those photos are so amazing. Very cool to see its evolution into maturity, too.
