Beaucarnea sanctomariana Luis Sandoval Herndndez
from the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, Oaxaca, Mexico

A new type of ponytail palm, which in
tropical deciduous forests in biodiversity hot-
Spot area as the Chimalapas known in the Tehuan-
Tepec Isthmus, Oaxaca, Mexico is home. The new taxon is
Beaucarnea recurvata and Beaucarnea hiriartiae very similar,
but differs
in its smaller flowers and fruits (the
smallest of the genus) Other distinguishing features between sanctomariana B. B.
recurvata are the smaller trunk but without base
Curls, shorter leaves and bracts of corrugated
Inflorescence, and by B. hiriartiae in with
far conical stem bases, wrinkled bark, smooth
Leaf surface, larger flower stems and shorter
Flowering branches.
