Desert orchid (eulophia petersii)

#1

Post by Steph115 »

Learned of this plant's existence recently, and I wanted to see if any of you had a small specimen you were willing to part with! Pretty cool "terrestrial" orchid. From what I gather, it used to be very rare and now not so much. Still a pricey one though!

Same here - in terms of finding out about it - and I just got one on eBay. It has a little offset, but it needs a lot of growing before I can separate it.

I have seen them for sale at a couple local C&S nurseries...both Bach's and Plants for the Southwest. Neither has much of an internet presence but a call might be fruitful...

mine rotted in the greenhouse. Had it for 5 years... flowered once when I didn't live up in the high desert (when I could leave it outdoors year round)... but life in greenhouse too tough for it.

Looks like a pretty decent deal compared to what they are asking for on eBay. The plant I got on eBay was cheaper but once shipping was added not that much cheaper and it is definitely not 1 gallon pot sized.

Arid Lands is fair with shipping charges. Lots of people on eBay not only mislabel their plants but overcharge for shipping.

Thank you all so much for your tips! I'm actually speaking with a seller who I've ordered from before on the dreaded Etsy ;) 3 healthy looking bulbs in a 1 gal pot for $30. She says she's had all of her eulophias flower this year by restricting water from November-April. I'll let you know how it looks once I get the plant and send you all her way if you're interested.

Received this plant with 6 immature bulbs & one large spent bulb in the mail yesterday! Priced much more reasonably than anything else I found online. The plant was very healthy with big, fleshy, firm white roots on all the young bulbs. The seller has many more so message me if you all would like her info.

Kate is very sweet. I discovered her on Etsy too but order from their website because I know it will save them from paying Etsy's commission. I got my Dyckcohnia from her and am on a waiting list for another.

She IS super sweet! Happy to have found her. She took the time to send me pictures of larger specimens that weren't listed on Etsy after I messaged her.

Just FYI, Grigsby's has quite a few of these, I was there last week and was very tempted to buy a few. Maybe next visit!
