Euphorbia ampliphylla

#1

Post by Geoff »

This is a somewhat commonly available tall columnar species, often sold as Euphorbia obovalifolia. It has exceptionally thin walls, though a fairly solid core (after all it grows up to 50' tall!) and is exceptionally sensitive to cold. There are several photos below that demonstrate this... one shot I uploaded to Euphorbia ammak variegated showing how that plant got burned during a freeze... but the plants on either side of the Euphorbia ammak are this plant- both completely killed by the same frost. Another shot below shows a dead individual from a freeze about to 28F. Native to much of east Africa, from north to south.
