I didn't think it would be difficult to hunt down the name of this plant, but I can't seem to find anything in Hechtia which matches exactly. Maybe it's not a Hechtia at all?
It blooms every couple to few years. If memory serves (big ?), the stalk and flowers ended up looking dyckia-like (but bigger, kind of like my D. marnier lapostollei which blooms every year, but on steroids, lol) and the flowers were orange/yellow and more dense...but it will be blooming again soon and this time I'll get pics and my memory will be refreshed. Leaves do not curve downward at all, but point straight out or even upwards. It offsets and forms a colony. These pictured plants are quite old, having resided in this spot for 10-20 years. Terminal spines are very pointy and seem to have a thing for my blood...part vampire-plant? The diminutive marginals are deceptive, they are sharp and grabby! It appears to be frost tolerant, because even the 20's of 2013 didn't kill it.
Anyone have an idea?

Here's a colony shot of a very similar, if not the same Dyckia as you have there, from the Huntington last week.

Re: Hechtia? or something else?
Thanks AgaveGuy. Can't say I'm not surprised given all the other Dyckia in my collection. Unlike my other species (all potted), this one has never changed color with sun, and it's definitely larger as well with proportionately longer and not very wide leaves. Cool...
Geoff, thanks for that photo. What a massive colony! Those inflorescences definitely look familiar.
So, Dyckia brevifolia (x?) it is...
Thanks guys!
