One Holiday season I was visiting family in Houston, Texas, USA. There was/is a nursery there alongside the freeway advertising 75% off Everything!! I couldn't resist. Among other temptations was a small row of "Red Pineapples" in 2 gallons for $15, each, back in the Perennial Section. (Remember: Houston is in Zone 9.) I"m not sure what 25% of 15 is, but that's what I paid...plus tax!! I swear it had begun growing while I was in route to return home to Oklahoma!! And, it didn't slow down once we arrived!! This brome pups up something fierce and is very generous with offsets!! I grow it alongside and treat it with the same care as my cacti and succulents...bright sunlight, easy on the water and feed!! It DOES indeed give fruit, but the pineapples are tiny if not ornamental! I love the maroon color of the foliage, and the architecture of the same, and these look exceptionally nice when grouped with pale colored Echeverias and also with my Plectranthus tomentosa; plants which thrive in similar conditions of exposure and care!! This is a 12 inch container, which gives them just the right amount of room to look their best!
