Mimosa dysocarpa

#1

Post by Gee.S »

We ran into these guys blooming at 5000' very near the Mexican border in mid-September, and have since procured some seed (shout out to Wade at YuccaDo!). They were serving as some very attractive companion plants to Agave parviflora, Coryphantha recurvata, and Mammillaria heyderi. I dropped five seeds in one container of my seedling tray. One month later we had movement, a single seed germinated. After two months a second seed has now broken through. BTW, the tall guys the Mimosa are leaning toward are not Agaves, but Hesperaloe. The fuzzy little green blob at the top is a Fero. I don't have much experience with this kind of thing, but so far so good I suppose...

Cool.
Reminds me..we need somebody to do a Caelsapinia write up of whats out there and if anything is new. I've seen some that are like mini Delonix.

^ Got a few of those: C. pulcherrima, C. mexicana, and some hybrid thing called C. 'Sierra Sun'. I used to have three C. pulcherrima, but tore two of 'em out to make room for more good stuff.

I must say, Mimosa reminds me a lot more of Calliandra and Acacia than Caelsapinia.

A third seedling is now up from the original 5 seeds planted more than two months ago.

Hey, I've got one! I think. Well, something germinated in my little pot and it's definitely a legume and looks suspiciously similar to those above. How are yours doing GS?

Mine all died. If I try them again it won't be in my little seedling tray.

Gah! If I had room under my LED light, I would try again. Each seed I planted germinated, but haphazardly over a couple of months, and it just wasn't working out in the tiny little seedling cell. Also, it wants to grow tall, and I have a low hanging florescent lamp there, another problem.
