Speaking of snail bait, I was a little late with this one. It's inside, perched on cinder blocks, in a tall pot, a foot of stem, nearly 4 feet wide, yet one snail managed to go up to the top leaf and go grinding away. I have to admit a tiny bit of satisfaction when I grinded that bugger under my foot... Snail pellets dispersed for all it's family and friends, albeit late.

Me and the granddaughter were looking at some snails. She's learning about them in Kindergarten. They teach nature young now. She told me the wood sorrels (aka my weeds in the cement cracks) are edible and taste a little sour. I was impressed!

How about the snails? They're edible too, you know, and taste like garlic butter. D))

Come to think of it, I think I might explore a new business venture as a rare food vendor.

The latest delicacy at French Restaurants:

Cold-pressed organic Agave Nectar fed "Baby" snails marinated in Aloe-Chamomile butter.

And, for that matter, why "sip" your rare wines when you can prepare this appetizer with it's shimmery sauce and wow all your big city socialite friends at your next specialized dinner Tete-a-Tete, sending them home all wobbly-in-the-knees:

Foie Gras on Baguette crostinis, arranged in a Late-Harvest Chardonay Reduction, topped with daubs of thyme-sautéed "early" slug puree ! :P :U:

A strictly Limited number of Recipes available here @ $5.95 ::roll::

Or perhaps to be immediately followed with an on-the-house mid-course palate freshener:

Trio of Wild Huckleberry, Passion Fruit, and Chocolate Mint-infused mini-sorbets topped with House-made Raspberry-Zinfandel sauce and a light sprinkle of anti-coagulant laced Pink Sea Salt.... ::wink::

The storm last night was a whopper. Not in terms of rain, which totaled almost a full inch, but the winds! I was worried I'd be going to sleep, only to find when I woke up, I wouldn't be in Kansas anymore. Wait...never mind, I wasn't in Kansas to begin with. Well, you know what I mean...

Anyway, that one day (but mostly the night) of rain matched last seasons entire April total, and we're now sitting locally @ 39.9" for the season. The weeds are really, really happy, which will probably be a really good thing for weed-whacker sales this year. ::wink::

Raining AGAIN..as in soaking in rains and cloudy all day. Temperate plants are happy..all the even moisture they need. Tropical's are advancing like cold molasses. The progress of last weeks warm is on hold.

They are saying more rain again everyday from Sunday to Thursday. I see in La Mesa its already near 80f today. I was noticing too that the variegated Aloe arborescens is getting that rotten tip look..sort of what it got in the warm rains in October.

Nothing to speak of here. The ground is still saturated, the air feels damp, there's clouds, the roads are wet, but the rain gauge barely registers anything. As far as what's happening here locally, this system moving through is much ado about nothing.

Plenty of rain blowing in at the Giants game last night. I hope they get the game in tonight!
Agave
"American aloe plant," 1797, from Greek Agaue, proper name in mythology (mother of Pentheus), from agauos "noble," perhaps from agasthai "wonder at".

I think I came close "Mildest winter ever"..in actuality became TODAY, "Wettest winter in California's recorded History"..going back 122 years. Something like 83" of water has fallen in rain or snow. Next week looks wet too.

So, in conclusion I'm wondering where folks ended up? Our seasonal rainfall total was 32.2"!!! (Just a couple years back it was 9".) Our winter low in December was 26°F, not bad. Coldwise it was nothing extraordinary. Rainwise...I don't have to tell you.

If we don't get another drop, we'll end up @ 43.5", compared to 24" for the previous season in Sonoma - North Bay SF Area. And, that 24" was already a blessing and Godsend coming on the heels of the drought. In that light, this year's total is nothing short of amazing. As mentioned before as well, another huge beneficial aspect of this season's total was the way in which it was spread out. I can recall for example a particular previous season where we got a whopping 8 or so inches in a matter of a couple of days. That is not too helpful, as most winds up just runoff and destruction. The spread out sustained variety we got this season I think goes a very long way to painting a happier face on California's water supply situation. Let's hope for more next season.

As far as cold, that was a surprise to me. Over a dozen freeze night lows, also spread out from Dec - March made this this the most brutal winter, inasmuch as this was the worst beating overall my outdoor plants have ever taken. Let's hope for a break from that next time around! ::wink::

You can double check- because I hardly believe it myself. We are at 19.57 inches. Compared to our historical 17.90. Yeah,I know. Something isn't right. But I am quoting the NOAA stats. Our low was one 32f,one 34f and mostly 40's in winter and some 50's for highest lows. The combo was enough to defoliate Ti plants that grew well for years. Cold and rain a bad combo for tropical or dry gardens.
I remember the 1996 El Nino. That poured on me 38". This year seemed close..but stat wise wasn't. Climate change is bigger in Hayward I guess. Clunk.
