Any sure fire advice to root a Jicama?
I've tried twice..and both times nothing happened but a very slow rot and the second..just turned into dried Jicama. No signs of sprouting of tops or roots. Heck, carrots can be re- rooted .I've seen them made into fat plant Bonsai. But Jicama seems soooo tempting. Big Adenia like tubers..

Lol, chop it up and put chile, salt and lemon on it. I did a search and you're not the only one who's tried. See here

Maybe the trick is finding one that's viable to begin with? Those that have been in cold storage or even possibly irradiated (as imported foods sometimes are) may not stand a chance.

Re: Any sure fire advice to root a Jicama?
Anybody know if Jicama is long lived? I've read of some huge tubers sold in Mexico. I think,I just got the ones treated- never even a tiny sign of growth both times. When I see the largest market tubers its like poor man's Adenia. Only I can't get them to grow.

I picked up these at the store today. They still have some roots and green tops. I can't decide if I should try to root them or make a slaw with chile and lime.

Ahhhhhhh,I never see them like that. To this day,I've never seen a vine actively growing. Do they use them at the C&S shows? At least they are novel.

I've never seen one as a plant but since these seem very freshly harvested I'm a bit curious to try.

So, a perennial vine in frost free climates, zone 10-12. A legume, with toxic foliage and seeds, a source of rotenone.

Stay tuned, Stan. I'll take a photo tomorrow. Nothing dramatic, but there is life.

No growth up top but some new water roots below. I haven't been diligent about changing the water unfortunately. It's tucked behind a curtain and I kind of forget about it. What do you think? Should I put it in some soil?

Re: Any sure fire advice to root a Jicama?
Great IDEA! That never occurred to me! Maybe if you have a hearing pad- put that jar on it. Warmer water gets better growth. I did that for a tomato cutting that would not grow in cool water..but once it went on to the mat- roots grew like crazy.
I once found a Jicama that had some live stem..it still rotted. Now I will try hydroponics.

They're very cold sensitive so I suspect any that have spent significant time in cold storage lose viability. These caught my eye in the store because they looked right out of the field.

Ok,Im trying on the next market visit. I wonder if the tuber can take sun? Or maybe grow it in light shade?
