Mango ripe!
It was green for months, then in 72 hours it turned golden. I hope it just goes on to grow over the years. To say its marginal is an understatement. They say- once these get tree sized they are drought tolerant. I have my doubts. The rest of the world doesn't know about our 6-7-8 month dry season...

Re: Mango ripe!
Thanks JK..Its been a long and winding road. Whew- Winter cold, summer too cool..all things I have to work through. Plus.. some shade from my other fruit tree's. But its really close to being there- tall enough to get that all day sun..plus that all day sun coming off the roof is another 20f summer and winter.

Re: Mango ripe!
Today.Last year it only flushed new growth. But all worth it as the fruit are double the size they were on the smaller plant. Funny, they were sweet small too. Mangoes are great fruit trees. Love em.

Re: Mango ripe!
A few years ago I tried growing a couple mango plants, they lasted a couple seasons, but soon after they bit the dust. The winter was too much for them. I am presently growing two guavas, but I am not expecting too much. Jkw

Re: Mango ripe!
If you put them under florescent lights in winter, you should get good growth. London is a cool summer climate though. I was told that its cooler than San Francisco. But! I know some grow then there in mini poly tunnels. Its can make a 68f day into 84f in summer sun.
I would recommend..what I have. Manila-Ataulfo-Champagne, Mangoes grow true from seed, and seem to have extra capacity to put up with mistakes. Grafted types frozen back ..disappear into the rootstalk. But..if you kept them from freezing all year..plenty of types do great in pots. The "condo" mangoes,or going for fast growth? Baileys Marvel or Valencia Pride.
Tricky to keep..but it can be done, JK.

Re: Mango ripe!
Are you sure they come true from seed? All our mangoes are hybrids, aren't they? Why else would they be sold grafted?
Mouth-watering pics, btw

Re: Mango ripe!
Vieg the smaller fruited type do grow true from seed. But,I have been reading that many of the larger type of Mango fruit- Keitt, also more often then not also grow true..very few people have posted a Mango they grew from seed was a bad one- stringy, poor taste etc. Me? I think that they are now so many generations old, very few revert to the wild turpentine tasting Mango's in the jungles of India.
Obviously the less warm the climate the slower the grow. I think I just slide under the limbo pole to grown them outdoors,in ground and with some production. Wiki says the ideal growing temp. is 82f for these tree's. We "push" 80f or so in our warmest months.

Re: Mango ripe!
Nice job, Stan. My dream house would have a tall built in solarium big enough for a small tree. A house I used to visit as a kid had one and I always thought it was so cool that you could see dirt right there in the house.
