Agave 'Blue Glow'
Agave ×'Blue Glow' = A. attenuata × A. ocahui (???)
Agave
"American aloe plant," 1797, from Greek Agaue, proper name in mythology (mother of Pentheus), from agauos "noble," perhaps from agasthai "wonder at".

Re: Agave ×'Blue Glow'
We've now seen a couple of Blue Glow blooms, and the supposed original ID of A. attenuata × A. ocahui seems suspect. No hint of A. attenuata in the blooms.

4" pot and nothing to brag about but the light was nice. At $5 each I should have gotten 4 or 5 of these to plant in a group. Hindsight, 20/20.

These are some lovely specimens above. Thanks to all who posted. Here is one of my 'Blue Glow' agaves. I planted it with a small stand of Crassula clavata to bring out the red leaf margins.

Re: Agave 'Blue Glow'
Thanks for the video, Gee. I've heard a lot about Kelly Griffin, but haven't seen much from him on social media. Here is one of my Blue Glows after spiking and flowering. Note the clump of rosettes that formed in the center of the main plant. These are firmly attached. I'm hoping for a few bulbils to pop out on the inflorescence very late after blooming as I've seen happen on my A. bovicornuta and A. celsii v. nova 'Great Blue Form'.

Re: Agave 'Blue Glow'
Nice! If I'm seeing that pic right, you've already got some nice-sized interstitial offsets/replacements in that clump?

Re: Agave 'Blue Glow'
I thought I was in luck when those new rosettes started forming at the base of the inflorescence. However, when I attempted to separate them, it was apparent that they were very firmly attached, unlike e.g., the similarly positioned bulbils that my spent A. celsii v. nova 'Great Blue Form' produced. These do not appear to have the base growth plate (I don't know the botanical terminology here) of a bulbil, either. If anyone has any insights on these, I'd like to hear them. Are they bulbils or not?
It took this Blue Glow about 8 or 9 years to bloom. My agaves are not grown hard, so they have a shorter than average life from what I've seen so far.

Re: Agave 'Blue Glow'
Hard to be certain, but they look rather like axial branches.

Re: Agave 'Blue Glow'
My Mangave 'Bloodspot' did this when it flowered. I could break a few off, but had to essentially cut the biggest ones out. The 'Bloodspot' was small so not that hard to do. Let the cuts callous over for a bit and sit them on soil and they should root. I thought I would have about 8 replacements from my one bloodspot - which did not form bulbils nor seed on the flower stalk - but last Fall I had a very picky pack rat. He really liked young variegated Agaves, miniature Aloes, and Mangave 'Bloodspot' pups... so I am down to two, one of which is a survivor from being chewed on (and is really small), but the other one which I had located somewhere else is doing really well.
So if you can cut them out you should be able to get them to root.

Re: Agave 'Blue Glow'
Gee's axial branches description sounds more like what my Blue Glow has grown. They are large and firmly anchored to the main mass of the plant with no evident plane of dissection, surgically speaking. I would probably mangle them badly in any attempt to remove them, so I think I'll just sit tight and see if I get any bulbils from the inflorescence.
The other Blue Glow photo I posted above (June 26) is an offset from this plant, so I do get the rare offset for replacement plants. And if all else fails, Blue Glows are now readily available on the retail market.
