9a. That's more cold than B.recurvata can take..and much more than B.guatemalensis will ever survive.

I encountered some of these venerable old beasts in the same general area. The first two are the same plant with me for scale in the second pic. The last one, which I would estimate to be slightly smaller than these ones in the field, was in the botanic gardens at Zapotitlan Salinas and, according to the label, had been figured to be 800 years old.

Amazing, I have several small ones in containers. Not much bigger than 1-2 inch caudex. Maybe with a little fertilizer I’ll see a decent size one day.

I like it better than B.recurvata. How great to have one as a centerpiece for a C&S garden...whereas B.recurvata really wants lots of water all the time.
