Uncarina: The Pride of Madagascar

#1

Post by Jkwinston »

Uncarina are still not well known plants, and yet they are probably the best examples of the new generation succulent caudiciforms. They are classified in the Pedaliaceae group, and is significant because they are the only one that is exclusive to Madagascar.

Uniquely, because of their attractive foliage and spectacular yellow flowers, they without doubt stand a chance of becoming a notable trend in fat-plants. Their attractiveness is enhanced because they will flourish in any pseudo- tropical environment, and are able be able to stand some degree of cold.

Of the twelve species, the Uncarina grandidieri is easily the best known. But others like U. roeoesliana and U. decaryi are already catching up. There is still an identity problem when trying to name plants, but with increasing access to commercial nurseries the problem of identifying plants should soon become much easier. Below are photos which demonstrate easily why uncarina species are so attractive. Jkw

I'm still debating on planting mine in ground in a spot where it wont get the all day sun it gets now in a pot- or near all day. In ground,it could rot..rodents could get to it above ground and below. But,in ground it could easily develop into a larger plant. Tough call.

I would say, as soon as the weather warms up, it is worth a try. I will certainly protect it from extreme elements with careful monitoring. Jkw

JKWinston, how soon does yours start blooming in your greenhouse? Its now near end of June..and buds are forming on mine. I'm pretty sure last year it was in bloom by now. We had a rough winter.

At this time of the year, my main plant should be blooming Stan. But it is not, although the buds are forming. This is more to do with its late arrival in the greenhouse. As I keep it indoors during the winter, every year I usually move it out end of April. This year it was more like the end of May. Although they should easily survive in my minimum heated greenhouse, I find they do not always survive. This year another of my hybrid succumbed to a kind of dry rot, where the stems looks OK but is not. They appear to enjoy a regular room temperature dormancy. My baby Uncarina roeoesliana has been blooming all month. I will take a photo later today to upload. Jkw

Here goes Stan, as it is early morning here. Even the first flower of my main plant is out in my overcrowded greenhouse. Jkw

PS. I have real problems as I have lost my camera, and I am using a very old one which barely functions.

Have a look at my other hybrid, which I keep quite lean, and has now produced some blooms. Jkw

First blooms of summer are a little undersized. Echeveria to the left and E. subrigida to right just dug up and repotted. I had it in too much shade.
