Decarya madagascariensis.
A possible fat plant item..even if the trunk doesn't get very fat,you know its like one of THEM. I've had it for 15 years. Half by a hot sunny window, the last half outdoors when I never got around to bringing it indoors one winter. Every now and then it has small tiny leafs. Maybe a branch dies off for no reason...then it makes a nice comeback. It hasn't flowered yet. I've never trained it to trail..this one always has. Most on the net are upright.
A really good odd ball plant.

Wow Stan, it has a very unusual look, and I don't remember ever seeing it before. Next time it produces leaves , post a photo as I will be curious to see. Jkw

Re: Decarya madagascariensis.
When it was indoors- it would briefly grow them. I posted pics of that on Dave's Garden Winston.
I really got to get a nicer pot . Even a deep nursery pot would look better.

Re: Decarya madagascariensis.
Well, this is interesting. For the first time since its been outdoors about 4 summers now..its sprouted new leafs out of the main branch. 1st time ever that I remember. It would indoors grow leafs every couple of years from the zig zag branches. Indoors. Outdoors- its doing this instead. I guess its a good sign. For many years I thought this was z 11 tropical..needed hot winter and summer. Then I saw Cactus Jordi of xericworld growing one in the ground in soucal and it was huge compare to this. NOW, I see photos of them on the net as small tree's in Madagascar.
Why this one weeps? Like I said before,I've never pruned it to do that on what must be at least a 15-18 year old plant by now.
If I didn't mention it before- this plant has taken at least 31f and lived. Even all this years rain.
Those leafs are pretty much full grown. Tiny things.

Re: Decarya madagascariensis.
wow no.2,its continued to send out leafs and new branching. All I can think of that I do different is water it more, and I used a lot of old aquarium gravel in the planting mix last time I repotted it. But that last was 3 years ago now. So,maybe my prejudice that it wants to be on the very dry side ( in a pot) was wrong? Its also shaded a bit more by a potted Mandavilla vine.

Re: Decarya madagascariensis.
I read that taking a cutting from a side branch creates a plant that - at least for many years- wants to grow sideways. Makes sense and I have heard of that in plants before. I have a strong feeling that also makes for a dwarfish plant since these are all out tree's in Madagascar.
Hard to imagine a tree sized Decarya with this dense pattern of branching.

If you ever take any cuttings I would love to buy one from you. I let mine get a bit too cold this winter and it decided to die.

I might later. I'm behind in my promises. Its why I turn down some great ones I get..I just know I'm slow to pick out something and the whole schlemiel in return.
Aloe seeds are still safe. My weekend project is in 10 days and counting. I tell you what was just a coat of paint turned into that and flooring and paint and Varathane..

Re: Decarya madagascariensis.
Hello.
I just purchased one of these plants. It looks like a cutting with three little branches. I don't know much about it, so I wanted to ask you what's the basic care. Are they difficult? I asked the seller to include a heat pack with shipping since it is 30F low where I live. Not sure if that's a good idea. How often do you water during winter?

Re: Decarya madagascariensis.
Its in the very same pot to this day..and in even less soils as some washed out. Its changed...one large thick branch shoots left and from that there are zig zag branching. So,its a hardy plant in decent temps. I take it mine was a side branch cutting well over 20 years ago and stuck to that look.
Its done well indoors too. In fact I thought it was too tender first years with me and would overwinter it inside. Stopped doing that one winter and it did fine.
Indoors..just enough to keep it going in winter..outdoors rains take care of all the watering here.

Really different looking little tree and I would have thought it was dead! Looks healthier with the leaves growing out of it now.
