Re: String-Thing Agaves
I am finding, as Gee mentioned, schidigera and leopoldii (don’t have filifera) are very accommodating in Philly. Rain hasn’t bothered them yet, full sun here is fine, cold is fine so far (only down to 38 so far). I want to take the ‘Shira ito no ohi’ plants to the office this month. Will leave the leopoldii out in the cold and see how it goes.

Those are beautiful! I've never thought much about leopoldii, but the strings are very attractive on yours.

^I like all of those too. I have A. toumeyana seedlings that are almost starting to show strings...if you squint hard and use your imagination.

Brooksphilly, nice string things. I particularly like your last leopoldii photo. The angle and the diffused light are just right to nicely accentuate the curling threads. A nice shot of a nice plant.

Re: String-Thing Agaves
I was fortunate enough to stop by Starr Nursery a few years back just after Greg had received a few big flats of A. filifera seedlings in 2-inch pots. They were all pretty nice, but I picked out the whitest one!
It spent a couple years in a pot in a shady location, and lost much of its appeal. I put the pot in full sun this entire year, and just put it in ground a few weeks ago. The blazing sun it got this year really helped in bringing the white back...maybe another year or so and the boring green will be all grown out!

Re: String-Thing Agaves
Is it spineless? If so, looks like A. bracteosa.
Agave
"American aloe plant," 1797, from Greek Agaue, proper name in mythology (mother of Pentheus), from agauos "noble," perhaps from agasthai "wonder at".

Can you take a picture of the individual plant you want ID'd? Looks like A. striata, but so hard to tell from that shot.Neli wrote:What is the name of this agave? At the back. with white long thin leaves.

No ideas on the plant beyond what's already been guessed, but might suggest sending a PM to Paul (Paul S), since that's his yard?Neli wrote:What is the name of this agave? At the back. with white long thin leaves.

Re: String-Thing Agaves
Just seen this, sorry. If you mean the plant absolute dead centre at the top of the picture it is a Puya sp, a nice bright silvery one. It came with a collection number, not a name, and of course the label is now somewhere under that rosette of outrageously spiny leaves so I have no way of retrieving the information without some serious bloodletting. It must be due to flower soon, so that should help give it a name. Whatever it is, it has been hardy outside in my garden with no protection for around 10 years. So far it hasn't been the rampaging thug that some puya can turn into, either. I bet its just biding its time, though

I mean this one. I bought some recently. Not sure of the name but looks similar , Long straight leaves, very light almost white...Might be pups what I bought but they are like 50-60 cm long.Paul S wrote:Just seen this, sorry. Yup. that's the puya. It bears a strong resemblance to Puya castellanosii and may in fact be that.
