Aloe betsileensis

#1

Post by Geoff »

This Madagascan aloe starts out looking just like a smallish Aloe capitata, or even more like an Aloe conifera... very blue green leaves with prominent reddish marginal teeth. But the flowers is somewhat different from conifera and very different from capitata. This is one of my very favorite of all the Aloes- plant is beautiful even without any flowers. Eventually develops a large rosette up to 2.5 feet across with dozens of leaves that vary in color depending up the season (sometimes purple, red or greenish instead of blue-green). Flowers in winter are yellow are either solitary or have 1 or 2 branches (though still very upright). Racemes are tight cylinders of very closely spaced flowers almost like on a corn cob.

Unsure of cold hardiness since mine is growing under an overhang which undoubtedly protects it a bit against the cold... but temps got down to about 24F in yard and no damage was seen.

This doesn't have the great leaf coloring of the ones above, so I'm not sure it is labelled correctly
