If dogs and kids are a concern, I would probably avoid the likes of Sevin and Ortho when possible. A better general purpose pesticide might be Malathion, quite potent but a half life in soil of 17 days, so it breaks down quickly.

For 20 years I use Talstar P drench and it wipes out the ants and mealy without the need to revise the soil and disturb the roots. Works equally well as a foliar spray when infestation is above ground! Buy it as DoMyOwnPestControl.com. A bottle lasts years and years.

^ Basically the same termiticide as Ortho. Active ingredient is bifenthrin.
