Date Palms in 8a?

#1

Post by plantguy »

I've been doing some reading on date palms lately (any species) and saw that with protection, some species can survive the cold of 8a. What does this protection look like, and what species would survive?

For wet cold, Phoenix canariensis is definitively the hardiest Phoenix palm. They came back consistently in Central and North Texas from single digits. I’ve heard of one coming back from -11°F in Alamogordo, NM. Granted that was a dry cold and more brief than our event. Phoenix theophrastii is hardy in the desert but in wet cold will only take mid teens. Phoenix dactylifera will survive mid teens, maybe low teens if brief(we had a very small percentage come back from single digits), sylvestris is slightly less hardy depending on form. The others are not worth your time.
