Are you sure this is a cylindropuntia? Could it be a Grusonia?

You must be seeing it be taller than I think it is.

Thijs, I did not consider Grusonia till you mentioned it, and my personal memory of the plant itself did not sugggest that species group because of its size and height, even though I thought it needed to be recorded. But on second look it is certainly worth considering. And yet looking at some Grusonia yesterday, I found it difficult to come up with any named parallel. Are you suggesting a particular species? Jkw

It looks a bit like one I have in my front yard for which I lost the tag. The thing is after Tom's suggestion I looked harder at your photo and I think the plant is much taller than I initially surmised and afaik most grusonias stay pretty close to the ground compared to most cylindropuntias.

It is a shame that I did not search for a label in there, as most of the plants in the area were Cylindropuntia. I was chasing C versicolor and C echinocarpa, both of which I found. I have also added a close-up of the mystery plant. Jkw

The first 2 images look to be what they're labeled as

The closeup of the third helps to confirm my suspicion
