Mammillaria id and opuntia deformation?

#1

Post by nsp88 »

Just visited some family and saw this cactus in a pot. Google lens says some kind of mammillaria. It has survived over a decade with zero care or protection. Tolerated 0F unprotected.

Also while there, saw this weirdly shaped opuntia. It was the only pad like it. What causes this?

The abnormal pad formation of the prickly pear I've seen develop on many species in, or near, the desert; cause unknown.

The first cactus looks like a very proliferous form of Escobaria vivipara.

Thanks! No desert here, though. He said the soil sucks and gets dried out and giant cracks in it in summer., and it does get pretty hot there. But who knows.

Thanks for the id. Wasn't getting anywhere near that on Google lens. I took a tiny cutting, so hopefully mine does well.
