Yuccas in Red Rock Canyon

#1

Post by jam »

I decided to bike along the Red Rock scenic drive. The place is a short drive from Las Vegas, NV. Some Yucca brevifolia at the bottom soon to be replaced by Yucca schidigera and Yucca baccata.

It's a compliment from you, Daniel. It is quite windy today and the resulting clouds somewhat beautified the overall scenery.

That area is gorgeous. I love seeing the variety. As I’m sure you saw the Yucca brevifolia are solitary and don’t socialize but the schidigera and baccata have been known to fraternize and that area is rife with hybrids. Often you see ‘baccata’ that inexplicably trunk as well as ‘schidigera’ with oddly long, but green, leaves.

Yes, what a lovely place. Didn't take the Willow Springs trek as I didn't want to leave my bike unattended but I want to hike the Windy peak tmrw so plenty of eborispinas to be seen there.

I think each individual brings a different perspective and focus to an area. I hope to get back out soon.

There are (mostly) isolated patches of Y. baccata all across AZ with 1-2 m trunks, tho most are strictly landlubbers.

Are they hybridized or just experimenting with their lifestyle? Everything on the north side of the Grand Canyon stays on the ground. The plants as you move south and especially into New Mexico seem to get more airborne. I was confused when I first saw the rather tall and straight leafed Yucca baccata specimens in Santa Fe.

Here is a sample snap from the simplex corridor, in one of the very harshest parts of the Sonoran Desert, growing in extreme isolation more than 100 km from the haunts of any other yucca species.
