Please help ID this Aloe

#1

Post by RCDS66 »

This beautiful aloe came to me untagged. It has a striata look for sure but there are many differences. As compared to striata, leaves are smaller and wider. They have small coral colored spines on the leaf edges whereas striata normally has smooth edges. However, the leaf color and the coral color edges are as we see in striata. The bloom color and shape is almost identical to striata. Is it some striata hybrid or a different aloe?

Experts: please help in identifying. Thanks

Thanks Mic. You guys are so lucky that you get plants that are properly tagged. In my part of the world, selling plants without tags is a norm and at best, I am told that this is some kind of Aloe vera (generally all aloes are called varieties of Aloe vera here). Though the prices are much cheaper here but we mostly have to grow plants without proper ids. For many it doesn't matter but for me, its very important to know what I am growing so I have to spend lot of time searching correct ids for my succulents.

Aloe imalotensis is a possible candidate. I'm not sure about the flowers though. Never seen one bloom, and I'm seeing a bit different flowers for it on the internet.

How large is the rosette?
Species I'm growing from seed: Agave nizandensis, Agave difformis, Agave parryi, Agave schidigera, Aloe alooides, Aloe manandonae, Aloe dhufarensis, Aloe barbara-jeppeae, Hyophorbe verschaffeltii, Kerriodoxa elegans, Johannesteijsmannia altifrons, Chrysalidocarpus leptocheilos, Licuala grandis.

Thanks for the input meridannight. :U
The rosette is around 16-18 inches across. Seeing the photos of A. imalotensis in the aloe gallery ( viewtopic.php?t=1165 ), there
are similarities in leaf form and bloom shape however shade of Aloe imalotensis blooms seem to be pale orange as compared to bright orange in case of my aloe. Flower stalk of imalotensis seems to be more scattered as compared to a very compact stalk of my aloe but that could be because of a different micro-climate. My house being on a hill top has a windy environment most of the time and all my plants tend to be far more compact.

Seeing photos of Aloe imalotensis on the web, there are forms with heavily spotted leaves too. :?

It doesn't look a million miles away from Aloe striata.

It doesn't, agreed. But it has spines on leaf margins which striata doesn't have. Short and wide leaves too I guess.

It has a few spots too. There's a hybrid of striata and maculata that looks very similar.

Thanks for the input MitS. I have tried to search for striata x maculata hybrid on this forum and on the web but haven't been able to find any photos / information. Can you quote a link please.

A quick google search for "aloe striata x maculata" brings up a bunch of images that, to my eye, look pretty similar.

Yes. Many of them look quite similar though the majority consists of heavily spotted aloes and my aloe is very lightly spotted. But I have a clue now..... thanks for pointing out, Melt in the Sun :U

Looks very close. Thanks for pointing out, Garret. :U
Found this in the "Plant Catalog" @ https://www.waterwisebotanicals.com/pla ... p158037516 about Aloe striata hybrid 'Ghost Aloe'.
I am quite certain now that this one is a striata hybrid but I am not sure if it is a striata x maculata hybrid. Do not see much of maculata in it but may be.
