Trichocereus pachanoi variety?

#1

Post by Stan »

I' ve had this cutting since the 90's...only on the side of my house where the shade slowed growth...then about 4 years ago it rotted. I put that in this warmer spot and its gaining some vigor. I got the cutting long ago from Dunsmuir Home and Gardens in Oakland where they once had a C&S garden on a hillside that was installed by a Church of Plants ( What they told me!) with the tag of something about sun and warm loving plants being closer to God. One day a contractor backed over a big clump of this plant. I remember the clump being over 6' and like 8' wide..beautiful large cactus. Mine will never see that. They used to soak that dry garden on a slope all growing season and plants loved that. Eventually the garden wasn't wanted and huge Mexican barrels and the rest went to the Ruth Bancroft garden and the other local botanicals. I had this from a lucky day of being there.

Maybe. Only, the original plant was more of a big clumper than wanting to be a tree like that plant does eventually.
For years when it was growing from a small cutting it looked T. pachanoi to me. Now,I'm not sure at all. The color changed a bit.the spines got larger...

Yeah, it looks like there’s different variations of it, some with different diameters and Spine lengths.

I think also that it maybe a variety of peruvianus, the spines look large and a bit different, but the soil type can effect this

This is how I understand Trichocereus Pachanoi or as I have been told many times Echinopsis Pachanoi. Trichocereus Pachanoi Pc, meaning predominate clone or cultivar are in 90% of America and Australia, it cannot pollinate its self, but can be pollinated and can pollinate other varieties, as it is a clone. I do not know its history and there has been much talk about were it originated. The first 2 photo`s are of what is called a Super Pedro, which is very similar to a Trichocereus Pachanoi non Pc, as I do not have a Trichocereus Pachanoi non Pc, as they seem expensive and Super Pedro are easier to get your hands on. The last 2 photo`s are of Trichocereus Pachanoi Pc, only Trichocereus Pachanoi can be Pc.
