Not Phoenix but I have tried several times in Tucson. They need a LOT of water and are popular with rabbits. I still have one surviving but gave up on trying any more.

I myself have not, but I know the DBG has some out in their beds here and there if I remember correctly - in some form of mostly dappled shade and certainly on some kind of drip system.
It is what it is!

I grow Dyckia playphylla and Dyckia velascana (as well as an unidentified Dyckia)in ground in Chandler; both require some protection from the afternoon Summer sun and a bit extra water. Otherwise, they do well and have flowered each year.

Interesting to know. I once had one laying bare root in my dim garage for what seemed like months. The appearance never altered. One day I finally got around to plugging it into a bed outside. I didn’t think aside from extreme cold you could kill a Dyckia.

Admittedly late to the party on this one, but in case it's helpful, here's a thread with some dated pics of what I have in the ground. I've got quite a bit more and need to do an update, but in the interim, you may find this helpful.Pfancy wrote:Anyone growing Dyckia in the dirt here in Phoenix? Thanks
I have dyckia and hechtia in the ground here, and even a deuterocohnia. All have been doing exceptionally well, as long as I keep them watered regularly (every other day unless it's above 110F, in which case it's more like every day). I'll try to add some new pics one of these days.
Honestly one of my least troublesome, easiest growers. I have been very happy with them in ground, and find they tolerate the Phoenix extremes of both summer and winter without issue. I've never had to cover them up either to give them shade or prevent cold damage. Much less picky than a lot of my agave.

Better late than never, here's the latest pic:
Various Dyckia in the foreground, Deuterochonia longipetella is the third row, left side with the long flower stalk, which is dangling atop Dyckia 'Brittle Star' in the foreground. Behind that you have three clumps of Hechtia tillandsioides and and just beyond that, a pair of Hechtia rosea.
Here's some better shots of the Dyckia in the foreground:
And the Deut and Hechtia in the back:
Photo taken facing directly to the West. They seem to love this spot, good sun but never too much of it. Palm tree probably helps.

Looking great and fan palm got huge! Mine is 4ft tall with a large trunk on it now after being tiny when I bought it last year.
