Re: Pictures from Austin area
I wonder of the Yucca linearifolia might be Y. queretaroensis? There was seed once a few years ago and these might be the right size. Difficult to tell them apart but Y.l isn't usually quite so green.

Re: Pictures from Austin area
Yeah, Yucca Queretaroensis is was what I initially thought when driving by. I turned back around to get a look. They have a faint blue on the younger leaves(difficult to see in pictures)and grow under partial tree cover. The rosette is definitely smaller than my comparable Linearifolia and way less blue. These were the only type of Yucca in the yard, so not necessarily an enthusiast owner, and Linearifolia is better known in cultivation here. In fact Ive read some claims their native range briefly extends somewhere into Texas. I would like to find out if that’s true.
I found info online that Bertus Spee has located two different ranges/forms to Linearifolia. The second “Saltillo” form is greener, more compact, with denser/more numerous leaves. These seem to fit within that form based on pictures.
Based on an owners experience in Dallas that I read(200 miles North of here), Yucca Queretaroensis will survive the weather we had in February . I also believe there are a few in the John Fairey Garden that did fine. So still a possibility. Any info/pictures you have on the matter is greatly appreciated.

Re: Pictures from Austin area
Probably easiest if I link to some pages on my travelogues. You might need to scroll down a bit but it is all interesting
This is the first population of Yucca linearifolia I saw. The so-called 'Galeana' form from Nuevo Leon in the northeast - which is larger and bluer. Very handsome plants indeed.
http://www.oasisdesigns.co.uk/mex07/me ... o_16th.htm
Here some pics from two different populations of Y.l in the vicinty of a town called General Cepeda in Coahuila. Greener, smaller heads, more branched and more inclined to offset than the Galeana ones. Interestingly on one slope the plants lower down were inclined to crawl along the ground and had tiny heads.
http://www.oasisdesigns.co.uk/Mexicoweb ... vember.htm
A couple of days later on this trip we encountered another large population that were easy to access. Lovely plants. Near a tiny place called Nuncio on the Coahuila/Nuevo Leon border.
http://www.oasisdesigns.co.uk/Mexicoweb ... vember.htm
Now for a couple of populations of Yucca queretaroensis I have seen at two different locations (but same kind of vicinity) - both in Hidalgo.
This first one I have been to a couple of times.
http://www.oasisdesigns.co.uk/mex07/mex ... o_22nd.htm
And a different road to a different mine that we went down by accident and where we also found the hybrid, believed to be queretaroensis x filifera.
http://www.oasisdesigns.co.uk/Mexicoweb14/9th.htm
When Y.q was first described it was without sight of the flowers or fruit and it was lumped along with the dehiscent types as it resembled Y. rostrata. But it has since been found to have fleshy fruits just exactly like linearifolia, which it resembles in many ways. That said, I have seen dried inflorescences on Y.q and these do look rather smaller than those on Y.l. But it is clear that Yucca linearifolia and queretaroensis are very closely allied. I think without provenance it would be difficult to tell apart some of the larger greener linearifolia from queretaroensis. There is a strange 'copy and paste' thing going on with the flora on the high peaks of Hidalgo/Queretaro and the high peaks further north (Agave montana is found at both, for example) so it wouldn't surprise me if they shared the same ancestry at some point.
Had I returned to Mexico I would have liked to track down more populations of Y. linearifolia to see what they are like. In cultivation in Europe the blue form is far more prevelant yet I have encountered this in only one spot. I am sure it is elsewhere but it would be nice to know how they are distributed.

You should really put your travels in print. I know ink and paper is fading in popularity but I’ve yet to see habitat photos that rival most of what you have on your site.

Yucca Pallida, Constricta , Treculeana, and possible hybrids near Goldthwaite, Texas and Lake Brownwood. I originally thought there was Reverchonii as well, but now believe they may be Pallida x Constricta

Interesting how you get pics without people. You see any Agave "Belville" in your neighborhood? You may have already shone some and I missed it.

Yeah, I usually go on these road trips on Sunday's due to reduced traffic, and avoid pictures with cars/humans to reduce distractions. I actually had family in the Bellville area for a long time and never saw anything like that Agave. I own a couple from PDN. It may have been a random specimen from someone's property.

Re: Pictures from Austin area
Yeah, and it has the name to match: Goldthwaite, Texas. Its about 105 miles (168km) Northwest of Austin. I'm already 30 miles NW of Austin, so not quite as bad. Its definitely on the list of areas to visit for anyone into Yucca. Yucca Pallida is extremely dense in the area. Yucca Constricta and Treculeana are also in the area. I originally thought Yucca such as 93E63815-1D88-4C17-9984-2C5C5C6F5EE7 , were Reverchonii , but now believe its actually Constricta x Pallida . There were only a few and they were in the middle of large populations of Yucca Constricta and Pallida growing together. I also found large Pallida (3 feet wide) that had long, thin, more spread out leaves. Similar to the form and size of Constricta, but with Pallida appearance, leading me to believe they may have had Constricta mixed in long ago.
