A few cycad from Austin area

These were growing outside at Zilker Park, which means they’ve seen mid teens atleast. Nothing too exotic.

I figured it’s worth mentioning the Dioon Angustfolium didn’t even burn after the extended February freeze. That area probably saw an ultimate low of 7*F.

Yea, approximately 7*F in that area. It’s under a tree, I’m not sure if any other methods of protection were used. Hardiness of Edule seem to vary depending on locality and variation. I’ve read “Queretaro Blue” are the hardiest but can’t confirm.

I have a mess of two year seedlings that made our last winter under plastic with no extra heat in pots. Might try a few in the ground this winter or next.

In all my years I've never seen but one Dioon and it was edule,in a front yard. One. I have never seen a single Encephalartos or Cycas not Sago. The only exotic was a Zamia furfuracea. A big difference from socal. So,its like that here..it could be a frost free zone and it's a thrill to find a Schefflera maybe.

Yeah, Houston is like that. I’ve seen a few yards with Dioon here in Austin, but Cycas Revoluta is still the dominant cycad. It makes you wonder, out of all the millions of Revoluta in America, how many plants did those originate from? They offset and cone prolifically.
