Ultimate Stones grower hobbyist.

In case somebody missed this. It's in Oakland- not a hot spot and yet his open greenhouse seems to be warm enough (Z10B) and freeze free helps. We all have dabbled in living stones and they usually became dead as rocks soon after.

That last day of 30's was too much. I know the lows for my station were 35f..but three days in a row plus earlier a 30 in December..wore somethings down. Fremont can usually evade frost. If it's not the hills of Fremont draining cold air away, or the raised Mission San Jose area, then its the near the Bay of Mowry ave.. Maybe that was in a north or east exposure and it just got colder than the rest of the yard?
I was looking at the 1990's USDA plant map and how all the eastbay including Oakland was 9b,25-30f every winter. If I had 20's every winter these days? It would wipe almost all that I cherish  It would be back to when I was a kid and exotic was Citrus.

I recently just had frost damage on my Aloes. Other than that, mostly everythings fine. Now, I am putting most of my aloes (and gasteraloes) in the greenhouse. With some luck, I nipped it in the bud, and they will survive.

No need to greenhouse Aloes in the bay area. Especially this late in the frost season. We are in for more than a week of sunny weather 60's and lows in the usual 40's.
None of my Aloes had a speck of frost damage and I have some that are more tender than average.

Living stones? Sure..they should never get winter's cold rains. The hardiest like the famous Baby Toes,I've seen fill a good size pot on the porch of an Oakland friend years ago. But,no winter rains on them.
