Very cold hardy plant... tolerates our short freezes down to at least 18F... but is prone to rot if planted in shade and/or poorly draining soil. Gophers and rabbits both like to decimate this plant... has to be planted in a 360 'cage' where I live in the high desert. It is otherwise a pretty bullet proof plant in my soil and climate. Wind does not affect this plant at all from what I can tell. Flowers in summer every year here. Seems to grow faster and better when planted in ground, though roots are not too impressive, but caudex is.
